If your nonprofit filed for an extension this spring, your time is almost up.
For calendar-year organizations, the regular Form 990 deadline was May 15. Filing Form 8868 gave you one automatic 6-month extension — to November 15. Because November 15 falls on a Sunday this year, the deadline moves to the next business day: Monday, November 16, 2026.
Here is what matters now:
1. There is no second extension. Form 8868 gives one extension per return, per year. November 16 is the final date, not a suggestion.
2. The e-Postcard cannot be extended at all. If you file Form 990-N, it was due in May. Filing it late is better than not filing — the 3-year clock is what hurts you.
3. Missing this date starts the real trouble. Late filing can bring daily penalties, and missing three years in a row means automatic revocation of your tax-exempt status — no hearing, no appeal.
4. An incomplete return counts as not filed. Missing schedules are the most common reason the IRS sends a return back. File a complete return, and keep your e-file acceptance as proof.
Do not wait until the last weekend. If your books are not ready, get help now while there is still time to file correctly and on time.
